Hey, Brace Face
Most teens dread being told they need an orthodontist. It's not that they are not self conscious about crooked teeth, it's just the thought of wearing braces and the accompanying teasing.
Take heart, many new options are available for children and adults to make their time in braces more bearable. Let's talk a little bit about orthodontics first.
Ortho, meaning straight, and odons, meaning tooth come from the Greek. No surprise, there is evidence the Greeks used dental appliances as early as 1000 BC. Orthodontics refers to the diagnosis and treatment of malocclusions, fancy word for crooked teeth, and improper bite.
This is done by the use of dental appliances, braces and retainers. Wait a minute, braces are not quite the social stigma they used to be. Many teens and even adults take advantage of new advances in braces to straighten their teeth.
We have all seen the commercials for invisible braces. They are nearly invisible. The aligners are replaced every two weeks or so after a full set of impressions are taken. They are custom made for your teeth. Advantages, aside from the invisibility factor are many. These aligners are comfortable, no metal parts to irritate your mouth. They are removable for eating, brushing and special occasions. They sometimes work faster than traditional braces, in as little as six months for some cases.
Braces can be all metal with the familiar wires fitting into brackets cemented to the teeth. Newer braces are ceramic, tooth colored and much less noticeable. The latest innovation, very popular with teens, are colored ties. The color can change every time you visit your orthodontist and this is the rage among teens and even adults who want a fun look.
After a course of therapy with braces, retainers are often prescribed for a period of six months to a year. Some patients wear them longer at night to retain the new position of their teeth. These are also removable for eating, brushing, and special occasions.
So don't fret. Get yourself to an orthodontist and you can be a fashionista even while you're straightening your teeth.
