Missing Teeth?
If you are missing a tooth or several teeth, it may be worth your while to look into dental implants. Oh, I know, you've heard they take forever to heal and it really is painful.
That was true at one time, but new advances have made them much more user friendly and less painful. Instead of months of appointments, you can often replace a tooth in one visit.
Implants are titanium rods placed directly into the jawbone and a realistic tooth is placed on top. That still sounds painful, doesn't it? New rods can often be placed without waiting for the bone to heal around them and the replacement tooth can be placed immediately. Patients report that it isn't overly painful. In the past, you had to wait months for the bone to heal and it was uncomfortable. The new rods seat immediately.
As more advances are made, this technology will be more widely available. Your dentist can let you know if it is used in your area. If your usual dentist is not skilled in implants, you can easily be referred to someone who is.
The main advantage to implants is that they are very strong and will never decay. They look like your natural teeth and have the highest success rate of any restorative procedure. The risks are minimal and similar to those for any surgical procedure. Very rarely the implant may loosen or come out. Infection and sinus problems sometimes result All of these things can easily be treated.
Some people are not good candidates for implantation. Patients who are diabetic or have had radiation therapy in the mouth area are not good candidates. It is important that you are in good general health and smoking also increases the risk of problems.
Mini implants are much smaller and four to six implants can be placed to anchor dentures. The dentures you already have, if suitable can be retrofitted with sockets that snap onto the top of the implants. Dentures can still be easily removed and replaced by the patient for cleaning. The dentures will be much more secure and it eliminates the need for messy creams or powders to keep them in place. Better yet, you can eat corn on the cob without fear of losing your dentures.
Only your dentist can advise you as to whether implants are appropriate for you. The cost is high, but financing is usually available. Typical implants are two to four thousand dollars per tooth, but they will last a life time.
