Affordable Dental Care
If you're a little short of cash, and who isn't these days, a dental college can provide you with quality dental services at a reasonable price. Fees are typically 50 to 70% of normal prices, and there are colleges in most metropolitan areas.
Sounds good, but you don't want to be a guinea pig. Rest assured all students are supervised by the faculty to ensure you get the best possible treatment. The dental students have already completed much of their training and are in the clinical phase of their education.
Keep in mind that patients are selected based on need and you may not be an appropriate candidate if you need very complicated treatment. If that's the case, you will be referred to a specialty clinic.
Most college clinics offer emergency services, even if you are not currently a patient. You will need to arrive early as the amount of these services may be limited. You will get an exam, evaluation of the problems, and appropriate treatment. You must bring your doctor's name, phone number, a list of your medications, and any recent bloodwork. These clinics treat trauma cases, such as a knocked out tooth as well as patients with pain or swelling.
General dentistry clinics do exams, cleaning, fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, root canals, and some cosmetic work. Services offered vary from school to school, so check first to see what is available.
Some schools also offer pediatric services and advanced services. These may include, endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics and maxillofacial surgery. They are performed by students who have completed dental school and are working towards a specialty. Services are also closely supervised by the faculty.
College dental clinics usually accept medicaid. If you have private insurance, they will help you fill out forms for reimbursement. You will pay them and the insurance company will pay you. Your insurance money will go further at a college because the fees are lower than private dentists.
Check out a college dental clinic and save yourself some money. We all love to save a buck.
